Do you enjoy riding your motorcycle? Do you love riding the roads and mountain passes of Colorado? Then you probably know all about our state’s laws and motorcycle rules… Wait, you don’t? Well, don’t worry. The lawyers that ride know a few things that can help you stay on the right side of the law when you’re riding through the Rockies.

7 Things You Need to Know About Riding Motorcycles in Colorado

  1. You Need Lights—There’s a long list of things your bike must have to be road legal in this state. Headlights and taillights are just two of those requirements. But it’s important to remember that your taillights must be visible from 500 feet away, and they must be between 20 and 72 inches off the ground.
  2. You Need Mirrors—Mirrors are a basic requirement for road legal bikes everywhere, but did you know that your mirror must allow you to see at least 200 feet behind your motorcycle?
  3. Helmets Are Your Choice—In Colorado, it’s your right to choose whether or not you wear a helmet… Unless you’re under 18. Then you are required to slap a lid on your bucket.
  4. Your Eyes Are Important—If you can’t see, then you can’t ride. Colorado requires you to have eye protection when you ride. And no, a windshield doesn’t count as eye protection, so don’t ask.
  5. Have to Have Your M Class—Just like the rest of the country, you have to have a class M license or motorcycle endorsement on your license to operate one of these awesome machines on the road. Go get your license, and don’t forget that there are special requirements for riders under 18 in Colorado.
  6. Are You Insured—You need a $25,000 bodily injury/death policy and $15,000 of property damage coverage in our state. And if an accident involves multiple people you have to have at least $50,000 in bodily injury and death coverage too.
  7. No Splitting Lanes… Yet—For now, no riding in between lanes of traffic. But hang in there, we’re working on that one.
