With the election season in full swing, the American Motorcyclist Association is encouraging bikers to educate themselves on the candidates and where they stand on issues that affect motorcyclists by launching the “Vote Like a Motorcyclist” campaign. The association also published a guide that ranks politicians based on their stances on various motorcycle-related issues.

Wayne Allard, AMA vice president of government relations and former Colorado lawmaker, said that the guide is an important tool for bikers.

“The AMA is a non-partisan organization and doesn’t make political endorsements,” Allard said. “But we do provide tools to help our members make informed choices on election day and offer tips for getting involved in campaigns.”

The AMA frequently petitions Congress to adopt motorcycle-friendly legislation. Some of the issues that can affect riders this election cycle include:

• Motorcycle checkpoints. A few states have added checkpoints where motorcycles – and no other vehicles – must pull over for an inspection. Should they have a right to do this?
• Health insurance discrimination. Statistics show that motorcycle accidents are more likely to cause serious injuries than car accidents. Does that give insurance companies the right to charge higher premiums for riders?
• Restricted access. Some groups are calling for a ban on motorcycles in national parks, claiming that noise disturbs the wildlife.
• Mandatory helmet laws. Proponents claim that helmets can prevent brain injuries, and opponents say it is their right to choose whether to wear a helmet.
