In a strange and unfortunate coincidence, there was another massive car accident and pileup in the same county on the same day as the 35-car pileup we discussed on Monday. According to NBC Philadelphia, approximately 40 vehicles piled up in a serious of collisions on westbound Interstate 78 in Berks County on Thursday, December 26.
Interstate 78, in northern Berks County, was closed near mile-marker 40 westbound and eastbound between mile-markers 35 and 40. The mayor of Lancaster City, Rick Gray, said, “[t]his sort of caught us by surprise, no one was anticipating an accumulation.” This was more serious than the one on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, injury-wise. Once emergency crews arrived and safely removed everyone from their mangled vehicles, 25 people had to be taken to the hospital. One passenger, who suffered critical injuries, was air-lifted to the hospital by helicopter. The remaining injuries were minor and treatable by emergency crews at the scene of the accident.
