A motorcyclist from Cedar Falls, Iowa sustained serious injuries during a morning ride in September. According to WCFCourier.com, Paul Watters pulled out of a private driveway of the Target Distribution Center, turning north onto Hudson Road. The motorcyclist, 35-year-old Ryan Zaugg, hit the driver’s side of the vehicle. Watters did not sustain injuries, but rescue officials transferred Zaugg to Sartori Memorial Hospital with head and internal damage. He remains in intensive care with multiple fractures and head injuries due to the motorcycle accident.
Police cited Watters for failure to yield as he pulled out of the driveway and for tinted windows. Cedar Falls Police and the Iowa State Patrol continue to investigate the accident, but the citations indicate that Watter did not see the motorcyclist. Again, this is one of the most important safety precautions to take on the road: always be on the lookout for motorcycles. Because vehicle operators may have a field of vision that is higher up than where the motorcycle is, take a longer amount of time to scan the entire road before pulling out into traffic.
Though the crash may have been a complete accident, we must continue to lessen these types of incidents by taking safety precautions and taking heed of motorcycles on the road.
