Has BSA and Jawa Been Revived?

Learn more about Colorado motorcycle accident attorney Tom MetierIf you watch the Moto3 championship, then you’ve probably heard of Mahindra, but do you know anything about the company? Turns out Mahindra is the largest tractor manufacturer in the world, so why is it being named in a motorcycle racing series? Well, tractors aren’t the only thing Mahindra makes, and soon the company could revive a few classic motorcycle marques.

Are BSA and Jawa Back in Business?

It started as a manufacturer of small firearms, but soon its business blossomed. The Birmingham Small Arms Company Limited (BSA) branched out into bicycles, cars, buses and motorcycles. By the 1950s it became the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world, but mismanagement led to a steep decline. At around the same time, the Czechoslovakian motorcycle marque Jawa was making waves of its own. However, by the end of the century, both bike makers had been reduced to shells of their former glory. Then came an Indian company named Mahindra.

Mahindra is a well-known name in cars and motorcycles in India. Worldwide, the company is known for its tractors and its participation in MotoGP as a Moto3 bike manufacturer. But the company has been looking for a way to expand further into international markets. That desire has led Mahindra executives to invest in 51 percent of French motorcycle make Peugeot. Now the company is expanding its motorcycle clout.

Mahindra has just purchased the right to build motorcycles under the BSA and Jawa names. Experts believe that this move is the company’s attempt to move into the premium motorcycle segment in the market. That would make manufacturers like Triumph and Moto Guzzi its competitors.

This means the motorcycling world could be changing once again, and it might start looking like the motorcycling world of old. What do you think about Mahindra’s brand purchases? Do you think the new BSA and Jawa motorcycles will surpass their predecessors?
