The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC) is the oldest motorcycle race in the country, and there is no race quite like it anywhere in the world. However, there is at least one race in the world that the PPIHC is often compared to: the Isle of Man TT. Both are road races held on public streets, and both are often compared because many people consider these races very dangerous, but the PPIHC racing committee wants to make sure nobody can make this comparison ever again.
Can We Make A Safer Pikes Peak Hill Climb?
After the death of Carl Sorensen in last year’s PPIHC, the racing committee redoubled its efforts to make sure the race was safer. It instituted a new and controversial rule that banned motorcycles that came equipped with clip-on handlebars as original equipment, but race organizers didn’t stop there. In order to improve race safety, motorcycle manufacturer Ducati announced that it will help race organizers establish the Squadra Alpina Safety Team and the new Race Smart program.
What Is The Squadra Alpina Safety Team?
The Squadra Alpina Safety Team will be comprised of former PPIHC champions who will serve as rider coaches in the Race Smart program. Greats such as Greg and Gary Tracy, Carlin Dunne and Micky Dymond have already joined the effort in order to share their safety insights and advice to racers who are preparing to take on the road to the clouds. Ducati will also bring extra sponsors—like Brembo, Pirelli, and Shell Advance—to the safety effort.
