Do you know what the legal limit for driving under the influence is in Colorado? Do you know what it feels like when you are at that legal limit? Most people wouldn’t be able to answer that second question, but officials at the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) want to help drivers find out. A new breathalyzer program could help many people discover when they’ve had too much to drive, and the intervention isn’t a moment too soon.
A New Breathalyzer Program Seeks to End Drunk Driving in Colorado
BACtrack is a unique company that produces mobile breathalyzers so people can monitor they’re blood alcohol content (BAC). It’s smaller than your smartphone, and it’s Bluetooth enabled to allow you to look at your BAC data on an app in your phone. The app allows you to guess your BAC before taking the test so you can compare your perception to reality. It can also estimate the time it will take for your BAC to return to zero, and it has a feature that allows you to call Uber if your BAC is too high. Sounds handy, right? That’s why CDOT is trying to put it to use.
Colorado law enforcement cited over 21,000 drivers for allegedly driving while under the influence back in 2016. Almost 40 percent of those citations went to drivers who had already gotten a DUI in the past. So, CDOT wants to help these drivers see and understand when they’ve had too much to drive.
In a partnership with BACtrack, 475 DUI offenders were given BACtrack Mobile Pro personal breathalyzers to monitor their BAC levels. The program was initially only supposed to include 200 people from Jefferson, Adams and Weld counties. However, this program has spread all over the state, and now, even people from Larimer County are participating.
This could be a new page in automotive safety here in Colorado. The auto accident attorneys at the Metier Law Firm hope this new program is met with great success!
