Faulty and dangerous auto parts have the potential to cause serious injury or death to consumers. It is important to be aware of what you can do to keep an eye out for a recall so you can get a problem fixed before it leads to a car accident.
Victims die or face catastrophic injury every year from defective auto parts. Many injuries associated with car accidents are permanent and life changing, such as spinal cord injuries and traumatic brain injuries.
General Motors is a recent example of an automaker that had defective parts in some of its vehicles. The Chevy Cobalt had a defect that killed 45 people and injured another 60. According to the individuals responsible for investigating the safety issues with the Cobalt, an ignition switch could slip out of position, disabling the airbags, power steering and anti-lock brakes.
GM issued recalls for the Chevy Cobalt after coming under extensive public and legal scrutiny, including wrongful death lawsuits. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) rules specify that an automaker must recall products that are deemed unsafe for use.
Fortunately, consumers can check to see if a recall has been issued for any part on their car. The NHTSA runs a website called safercar.gov that allows the user to input their vehicle identification number, make and model. Safercar’s website is also a good place to find recall based news, tire ratings, car equipment safety alerts and crash test ratings.
