Chico The Chihuahua Gets A Helping Hand

A Grand Junction, Colorado Chihuahua is getting a second chance at life after being hit by a car and left on the side of the road for dead. Animal organizations have stepped in and offered to pay the bill for spinal repair surgery for the dog.

Mesa County Animal Services and spokesperson for All Breed Rescue Network Betsy Midkiff gave the rescued dog the name “Chico”.

Midkiff said, “He was a very stoic; a very ‘I’m going to make it’ guy.”

Veterinarians say that when Chico was brought in, he had no control over his bowels or bladder, which are common symptoms of spinal injury. They feared that Chico’s only option would be euthanasia, because spinal surgery is expensive.

“With animal shelters and rescues, there’s a limited amount of money to pay for medical services,” says Midkiff.

Fortunately, for Chico, the All Breed Network and the Colorado’s Helping Hands Foundation heard his story and offered to help. They are going to pay the full $6,000 for his surgery.

Chico was flown to Alameda East Veterinary Hospital last week to begin his surgery.

Spinal injury is a horrible injury for anyone, even a dog. Chico is a lucky pup.
