Ames Sisneros, 32, was driving a 2002 Cadillac SUV north on US 285 near Alamosa. He had four passengers with him: Ester Trujillo, 31; Adam Jiron, 24; Phil Lucero, 41; and Darryl Poole, 22. His car spun out of control and crashed into Dodge pickup belonging to Brandon Vannoy, 32. Both vehicles ran off the road in separate directions; Sisneros’s car rolled and landed upside-down.
The car accident injured all six people and all required trips to the hospital; half of them sustained serious injuries.
Colorado State Patrol officials say that Sisneros was speeding at the time of the accident, and that he and his passengers may have been drinking or using drugs. None of the Cadillac’s five occupants were wearing seatbelts, but Vannoy was wearing one.
Seatbelts Save Lives and Prevent Injuries
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), seat belts reduce car accident injuries and deaths by 50 percent. In Colorado, 82 percent of vehicle occupants wear seatbelts, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). This is below the national average of 85 percent.
