Since Memorial Day, Colorado law enforcement officials have been cracking down on impaired driving with their “100 Days of Heat” campaign. Last year, police made at least 1,442 arrests for driving under the influence (DUI) during the campaign and 25,789 DUI arrests throughout the year.

As of August 18, Colorado police have made at least 1,301 DUI arrests since Memorial Day.

Drivers can legally operate a vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or lower. In 2010, 76 percent of fatal drunk driving crashes involved a driver with a BAC of .15 or higher. Colorado State Patrol Chief Col. James Wolfinbarger said that one of the main goals was to crack down on these highly intoxicated drivers.

“These people are not just having one drink, they are getting very drunk and then getting behind the wheel,” Wolfinbarger said. “That is why it is critical for everyone to plan ahead before getting to the point of intoxication when decision making is poor. Figure out a plan before you begin drinking, or expect to face the consequences.”
