Colorado Springs has seen an influx in the number of motorcycle accidents during the last year, with half of traffic accidents involving motorcyclists. Of the 26 people killed in city traffic accidents, 12 of them were riding a motorcycle.
City officials are perplexed as to what is causing the spike in accidents. One rider involved in an accident took extra precautions by taking motorcycle safety courses and wearing protective clothing, but sadly lost his life to an inattentive driver.
Drive Smart Colorado, an organization that promotes traffic and pedestrian safety, has said the influx in accidents may be due to more motorcycles on the road. More motorcycles are being registered every year, and as that happens, the chances of an accident can increase. Drivers who do not see motorcyclists contribute to a majority of motorcycle accidents and more motorcycles on the road increases the risk.
How Can Colorado Residents Avoid Accidents?
In response to the increase in accidents, authorities are talking about the importance of taking motorcycle safety classes. Training classes cost $200 and last for three days. If motorcyclists want to practice what they have learned, state officials are recommending vacant lots as places to practice.
Remembering that not all cars can see motorcyclists and may not check their blind spots can save your life. Always give other vehicles and yourself plenty of room to maneuver.
To help motorcyclists stay safe across Colorado, the Colorado Department of Transportation publishes their Live-to-Ride map, which rates highways across the state for safety. You can find it on CDOT’s website.
