A man died in a motorcycle accident in Colorado Springs on Sunday, May 20. The accident occurred at a five-point intersection that joins Cheyenne Boulevard, Cascade Avenue, Tejon Street and Ramona Avenue.
The accident occurred early Sunday near 1:00 a.m. The rider, whose name has not been released, crashed into a retaining wall in a residential area. His body was thrown from the motorcycle and he died at the scene. Police say that speed and alcohol were both probable factors in the accident.
Witnesses saw the man’s orange 2003 Suzuki SV 1000 crash into the retaining wall while traveling at high speeds. Colorado Springs police estimate that the man was driving close to 50 or 60 miles per hour. No one else was killed or injured in the accident.
According to the Network of Employers for Traffic Safety (NETS), speeding is a factor in 37 percent of fatal motorcycle accidents, and alcohol is factor in one out of every three fatal motorcycle accidents. For every mile traveled, motorcyclists are 35 times more likely to be involved in a fatal accident than an automobile occupant is. Other studies have found that alcohol affects a motorcyclist’s handling skills more than a motorist’s because motorcycles require more balance and focus. Even one drink can affect your riding skills. If you plan on drinking, plan an alternate method of getting home that does not put you or others in danger.
