Are Concussions a Serious Type of Traumatic Brain Injury?

Concussions, also known as mild traumatic brain injuries, have the potential to become severe traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) if people are unable to recognize the symptoms and seek medical attention.

A physician at the Northern Colorado Rehabilitation Hospital is urging individuals to learn to recognize the symptoms of a concussion so further damage to the brain can be avoided. During a concussion, the brain bounces and twists inside the skull, causing the brain to become more sensitive to additional stress.

Symptoms of a concussion include feeling extreme tiredness, difficulty thinking clearly or concentrating, blurry vision, headaches, vomiting and dizziness.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, over 1.3 million Americans suffer from concussions every year. While some people recover from concussions, others have lasting effects. Second-impact syndrome can occur when the brain receives additional trauma after sustaining a concussion. Individuals who have second-impact syndrome can die from brain swelling or suffer additional and more severe effects from their brain injury.

What Has Been Done in Colorado to Protect People from Concussions?

Although car accidents and falls are main causes of concussions, athletes have been in the news a lot due to a national debate around concussion policies in professional, college and high school football. The Colorado Senate passed Senate Bill 11-040, known as the Jake Snakenberg Youth Concussion Act, requiring a heavy reliance on education of concussion identification, removal from play if a concussion is suspected and returning to play only if cleared under medical supervision.
