CU Boulder Student Hit While Crossing Street

Most of us learned to look both ways before we crossed the street, and it is an ingrained behavior in the majority of people. As much as this habit helps keep us safe, sometimes it is not enough to prevent an accident. Automobiles move quickly, and depending on a variety of factors, they can be hard to see.

A truck hit a University of Colorado student last week as he was crossing the street on campus. The pedestrian was not using a crosswalk when a blue Toyota pickup truck hit him. He sustained a serious head injury, and authorities had to take him to Boulder Community Hospital.

The driver of the truck, also a male CU student, told police he was going slowly because the sun was impairing his vision, and police confirm that no speeding, drugs, or alcohol appear to have been involved in the accident.

It is possible to miss a car coming when you go to cross the street, even when you check carefully. This accident points to the advantage of crosswalks, where cars know to look for pedestrians, even if the pedestrians do not see them.
