Deer Takes Two Riders Down

Two Omaha, Nebraska motorcyclists are lucky to be alive after hitting a deer on the weekend before Thanksgiving. Both survived their motorcycle accidents, but one wound up in the hospital.

Stanley Hall was riding down Interstate 680 near 60th Street with a group of motorcyclists, including his cousin, when a deer leaped into the heavy traffic. “Just right there, pow!” said Hall. “[It] came out of nowhere.”

Hall said the deer appeared so quickly that there was no time to swerve or stop to avoid it.

“I hit it on my left side, then my foot hit it,” he said. “It spun around, my cousin hit it, he tumbled a couple of times in the air and landed over there.”

The Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s deputies say they see this kind of situation often. Sheriff Jeff Danker said, “We can have 7, 8, 9 accidents with deer over the span of a weekend.” The crashes are common because of deer migration and mating season.

Sheriff Danker recommends paying attention to the shoulders of the road and driving the speed limit to avoid deer. If a deer does jump out in front of you, it is far safer to hit it than attempt to swerve and avoid it.
