Three members of the Denver Broncos organization have been arrested for drunken driving within a seven-week span, including two team executives, according to The Denver Post. On July 6, director of player personnel, Matt Russell, became the third member of the Broncos to be charged with a DUI since May, following the arrests of Tom Heckert, director of pro personnel, on June 11 and Quentin Saulsberry, a center-guard from last season’s practice squad, on May 19.
The arrests have resulted in suspensions for both Matt Russell and Tom Heckert. The Broncos suspended Russell indefinitely and Heckert for one month, both without pay. The National Football League (NFL) will not discipline Russell or Heckert any further, informing the Broncos of its satisfaction with the way the Broncos handled the arrests.
“It’s disappointing when you have people working for you that get in these situations,” said John Elway, who runs the Broncos’ football operations as executive vice president. “It’s embarrassing for me, it’s embarrassing for the organization, as well as for Tom and Matt.”
Russell and Heckert will each receive treatment during their suspensions.
“We have to keep specifics of treatment confidential due to the personal nature of this,” Broncos president Joe Ellis said. “But obviously there will be some form of counseling and education and rehabilitation involved here. Both Tom and Matt are accepting of that.”
