A Denver police officer survived an on-duty motorcycle accident with minor injuries. He was released from the hospital hours after the accident took place.
The officer was pulling someone over on eastbound I-70 at Peoria in Aurora. A pickup truck collided with the officer’s motorcycle. The officer was rushed to Denver Health Medical Center, treated for his injuries and released.
The road was blocked for several hours while officials tended to the accident.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that 559 law enforcement officials died in motor vehicle crashes from 2000 to 2008, a significant increase from the 1980s and 1990s. The number of law enforcement officials killed in motorcycle accidents typically ranks in the single digits each year. Since 1980, 90 law enforcement officials have died in motorcycle crashes. Most of those accidents took place between midnight and 4:00 a.m.
While most motorcycle accidents occur at night, this one happened in the afternoon on a clear day. Motorists should always keep an extra eye out for motorcycles, especially as the weather warms and the days grow longer. Do your part during National Motorcycle Safety Month to prevent motorcycle accidents.
