Motorcycles have less protection than passenger vehicles, so it is important to add as many layers to personal safety as possible while riding. Anti-lock brakes can provide riders with an extra layer of protection by allowing motorcycles to come to a safe stop. Without anti-lock brakes, riders may lose control while coming to an abrupt stop.

Anti-lock brakes use sensors that balance braking systems on motorcycles, preventing too much or too little pressure on the front and back wheels. Wheels can lock up if too much braking pressure is applied. If too little pressure is applied, riders will be unable to stop in time to avoid collisions.

Sensors attached to the braking system automatically measure wheel speed to determine the right amount of pressure to apply. This mechanism allows riders to maintain control of their motorcycles and avoid collisions. Brakes that can automatically release and apply pressure also improve stops on wet surfaces, making it safer to ride during and after rainy weather.

How Effective Are Anti-Lock Brakes?

Anti-lock brakes have proven to be effective in numerous studies and tests. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, fatal accidents are 31 percent lower for motorcycles equipped with anti-lock brakes. Another study from the Highway Loss Data Institute shows that motorcycles equipped with anti-lock brakes have 20 percent fewer insurance claims for collisions.

Anti-lock brakes are becoming mandatory on motorcycles in some parts of the world. Europe is expected to institute a rule requiring anti-lock brakes on motorcycles by 2016.
