A 70-year-old woman was crossing the street at the corner of First Street and Denver Avenue in Loveland, Colorado. It was close to 8:30 am when a bus turned left onto the street she was crossing. The bus struck the woman, and she was taken to a hospital. According to the Denver Post, she is currently in the intensive care unit receiving treatment for head trauma.
There were no students on board the bus at the time of the accident. The bus was returning to the transportation center. No names have been released, and the police have not announced if they will file charges. They told reporters said that they do not suspect drug or alcohol involvement in the bus accident.
Bus and Pedestrian Accident Statistics
In 2010, pedestrian deaths made up 13 percent of all traffic deaths in the U.S, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). On average, 4,500 pedestrians have died in traffic accidents each year over the past decade. A quarter of those accidents (25 percent) took place at intersections, and 160 people between the ages of 70 and 74 died in pedestrian accidents.
According to the Center for National Truck and Bus Statistics, bus accidents killed 77 pedestrians in 2008.
