Electric Motorcycle Protocol Addresses Growing Trend

The Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC) has adopted an official protocol for determining the top speed of electric motorcycles. MIC president Tim Buche said that this would help an expanding consumer base choose the best motorcycle.

“The more that electric motorcycle makers adopt this protocol, the more it can help buyers who are taking a good look at this emerging segment,” Buche said.

Sales figures would indicate that more and more riders are choosing to go electric than ever before. Motorcycle company Hollywood Electrics said that it sold more electric motorcycles in the first quarter of 2012 than 2011 and 2010 combined.

Why are so many riders opting for electric over gas? As gas prices climb and electric bikes become more fuel efficient, alternatives look more appealing. And they are here to stay, according to Hollywood Electrics co-owner Harlan Flagg.

“With the Nissan Leaf and Chevy Volt, people are starting to pay attention and take it seriously,” Flagg said.

The major motorcycle manufacturers have yet to commit to selling an electric motorcycle, but it appears to be on the horizon. Honda unveiled an electric racing prototype late last year, and BMW announced plans to introduce an electric scooter in the next three years.

Electric models might also be safer than traditional bikes. With no gas, the chances of severe burns or serious injuries in the event of a motorcycle accident are not quite as high.

What do you think? Would you consider buying an electric motorcycle, or do you need the growl of a gas-powered bike?
