Motorcycle accidents can sometimes leave riders with traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), causing symptoms that may last for a long time after the initial wreck. British actor Damian Lewis, the former star of the popular series Homeland, sustained a mild traumatic brain injury during a motorcycle accident in 1998.
According to the actor, he was leaving a play in London when he collided with a cab, shattering its windshield and rendering him unconscious. Months after his accident, Lewis became depressed, his behavior became more aggressive and he suffered from migraines.
Is There a Link Between Depression and Brain Injury?
The behavioral and emotional changes experienced by Lewis are common symptoms for individuals who have sustained a TBI. According to research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, individuals with a TBI are eight times more likely to suffer from major depression than the general population. Research found that out of 559 people with a TBI, 53 percent were diagnosed with major depression within the first year of their diagnosis.
TBIs are a common injury with motorcycle accidents, and capable of causing long lasting and sometimes permanent effects. Victims who have sustained a TBI can also suffer from slurred speech, poor attention span and memory problems.
