Father Arrested Over Infant Son’s Deadly Brain Injury

A five-month-old boy was taken off life support on November 21 at Children’s Hospital in Aurora, Colorado after being submitted to the hospital three days earlier with a head injury. The infant, Antonio Angel, was with his father, 23-year-old Anthony M. Angel, when he sustained the injury.

Police arrested the father last week on warrants for child abuse resulting in death and first-degree murder. He is currently in Pueblo County jail in lieu of $250,000 bail.

The child’s mother has also been arrested on separate charges of theft by receiving and pawnbroker violations, according to police.

Sgt. Darren Velarde of the Pueblo Police Department said, “Medical experts said he died from an acute injury and (Anthony M. Angel) was the last one to be with the child.”

When the father brought the child to the hospital, he told authorities that the baby had hit his head on a bus, but Velarde said the child’s injuries did not match the story.

It was during the course of the investigation that police discovered information about the mother selling stolen gold to pawnshops, prompting her arrest.

Crimes against children are some of the most difficult to comprehend.  It will be up to the courts to decide what actually happened, but the infant’s death due to brain injury is upsetting, regardless of how it occurred.
