The American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012, better known as the Fiscal Cliff bill, is a lengthy document (59 pages) that includes many tax cuts and benefits. One of them affects motorcycle riders because it extends tax credits for people who buy energy efficient vehicles. Specifically, it extends “credit for 2- or 3-wheeled plug-in electric vehicles.”
Zero Motorcycles, one of the world’s leading manufacturers in energy-efficient bikes, helped push for tax credits on electric motorcycles. If you buy one of these bikes this year, or if you bought a 2012 model, you are eligible for a 10 percent federal tax credit.
Jay Friedland, Zero Motorcycles’ vice president of strategy and sustainability, said that electric bikes are good for the environment and the economy.
“Tax credits for electric motorcycles are not only an effective way to create jobs, but they are also an investment in clean energy technology,” Friedland said. “We think that America can and should lead the world in cutting edge clean technology.”
Electric bikes are usually more expensive than engine-powered motorcycles, but riders can save a lot on gas. They are also lighter and free of gasoline, so they are less likely to cause serious burn injuries in motorcycle accidents. However, since they are so quiet, drivers may not notice electric bikes coming around the corner.
