Five Tips for Cross-Country Motorcycle Trips

As the weather warms into spring, you may feel the open road calling you. Traveling across the country on your motorcycle can be incredibly exhilarating, but there are a few precautions worth taking to ensure the best trip. Here are five things you should consider:

  1. Service your bike. You want to do everything you can to avoid a breakdown on the road. Having a mechanic service and tune up your motorcycle before your trip is the best way to avoid an unpleasant surprise.
  2. Prepare for the weather. You may have to deal with heat, cold and rain while on your trip. Any of them can make a great trip terrible if you are not prepared.
  3. Plan your route and keep it handy. You can print up a map of your route, seal it in a plastic document protector and tape it to your tank, or if you prefer, you can use a GPS.
  4. Keep a line of communication. Whether you use a cell phone or a C.B. radio, communication is vital for a safe trip. Keep in mind, though, that using these devices while riding is dangerous, so make sure to pull over.
  5. Carry a first aid kit. A simple first aid kit is inexpensive and you never know when you may need it.

Keep the above tips in mind when you plan your journey. Motorcycle accidents and injuries are usually avoidable, and proper planning is a great way to avoid the worst situations.
