Five Ways Motorcycle Maintenance Will Keep You Safe

Motorcycle maintenance and ensuring all parts are in working order is a very important part of staying safe while riding. Mechanical failures can kill us riders, and maintenance can help avoid catastrophic motorcycle accidents. Motorcycles have many parts that should be checked regularly.

  • Always have the manual to your motorcycle when creating a maintenance checklist, as different bikes will have different requirements for upkeep. Manuals for most motorcycles can be found online for riders that have lost their copies.
  • Checking the tires is always important, not just for riding in poor weather. Poorly maintained and underinflated tires can cause blowouts, which is a disaster while riding at 60 mph.  Checking tread depth and looking for holes or punctures is also important. Always check tires in well-lit areas.
  • Remember to check handlebars and steering. For riders who make frequent trips, ensure wear and tear has not caused the bearings to become ineffective. Take a seat on your bike and make sure the steering feels smooth. It may be time to replace the bearings if the steering feels loose.
  • Our ability to brake quickly can avoid collisions with other vehicles. If brake pads are too thin, it will slow stopping speed, which can prove fatal during a collision. Brake fluid should also be maintained for maximum stopping power.
  • Lights are important tools that alert our presence to other motorists. Brake lights are especially important. Riders should check lights as often as possible.
