Ford Motor Co. Announced Two New Recalls Of 2013 Escape

According to the Detroit news, Ford Motor Co. will be issuing two new recalls on the 2013 Ford Escape SUV. In approximately 140,000 2013 Escapes, engine cylinder heads may potentially overheat causing a crack which leaks oil and subsequently lights the engine on fire. Though no one has yet been injured, roughly 30 engine fires have been reported in North America.

In addition, Ford will issue a second recall to cover the inspection costs of 9,469 2013 Escapes to check for fuel leakage that could cause engine fires. Owners will be advised to fix engine shielding, cooling and control systems. To correct for these issues, the new 2014 model will feature a new engine temperature checking device.

The latest recall marks the fifth in a series of recalls regarding engine fire issues dating back to July of 2012 when Ford recalled 11,500 2013 Escapes. Drivers were informed to cease driving immediately due to risk of fire caused by a damaged fuel line. Then, in September, Ford issued a second recall concerning a loose plug in the engine cylinder head that could potentially catch fire. In November, overheating caused fluid leaks which resulted in 12 Escape engine fires.

“Those are great lessons learned. We’re dealing with them now,” said the Ford president and CEO. “We were very disappointed it happened on a fantastic vehicle…We’re always learning new things and we’ll fix the process,” he continued. The recalls have not effected Escape sales, which have increased 13.9 percent in the past year.
