Four Cold Weather Riding Tips That Could Save Your Life

Winter is almost here, and those of us who keep riding this time of year face many safety hazards. Freezing weather, icy roads and cold winds can cost us our lives. So how can we prepare and save ourselves from being injured or killed in motorcycle accidents during this time of year? There are four tips every rider should be aware of while riding in cold weather.

  • Proper clothing is essential during the winter, as it not only makes riding more comfortable, it can save your life. Adding extra layers can lessen the safety hazards that come with cold weather. Ensuring the outermost layer is wind-proofed is also essential. If the outside temperature is 40 degrees, the wind chill could be close to freezing.
  • Check tire pressure before setting out to ride. According to RideApart, a motorcycle news organization, many riders forget cold temperatures cause tires to lose air pressure. When tires lose too much air pressure, handling becomes difficult and blowouts can occur.
  • Checking tire quality is important for many of the same reasons as checking pressure. Older or beat up tires will not perform well in extreme conditions. Handling can become difficult in cold weather on tires with poor treads.
  • Always check weather conditions before riding during winter months. If there is any chance of freezing rain, ice or sleet at any point during a journey, it is too dangerous to ride. There is a point where it is “too cold” to ride safely.

Education is an important part of motorcycle safety for both experienced and novice riders. Riding in winter conditions can be unpredictable for more reasons that we have listed in this blog post, so follow Metier Law Firm on Facebook for future updates.
