Futuristic Star Wars Motorcycle To Be Used By The U.S. Military

iStock_000006175502XSmallStar Wars fanatics may remember the famous scene from Return of the Jedi, where two of the main characters speed through a forest-covered world on hovering motorcycles. The 1980s sci-fi movie may not be so farfetched, and in a few years’ time, U.S. combat troops could utilize hovering motorcycles to traverse difficult terrain. The Department of Defense is interested in the technology, which it believes could serve as a multifunctional vehicle for both military and humanitarian purposes.

Malloy Aeronautics claims that U.S. military planners could utilize its hoverbike to do things helicopters and other similar tools of war cannot. According to the company, its hoverbike could be operated and bought at significantly lower costs and would also reduce the risks of collateral damages associated with larger military vehicles. The futuristic floating motorcycle can be flown both manned and unmanned, and uses rotor blades to operate.

As a multi-role vehicle, developers suspect military planners would use its hoverbike for high-risk rescue operations, reconnaissance, humanitarian missions and first-response emergency services. A deal has reportedly been made with the US Army to develop the bike.

When Can I Buy A Hovering Motorcycle?

Although no plans have been made to develop this futuristic motorcycle for civilian use, it is worth noting that many famous inventions were first utilized for military purposes – such as the internet, GPS, duct tape, computers and the microwave. In 20 years from now, everyone may be able to relive the exciting scene from Return of the Jedi.
