A September 6 tractor-trailer rollover following a collision with a car forced the closure of the eastbound lanes of I-70 near Georgetown for several hours. According to the Denver Post, the truck-car accident, which left the highway covered with debris, happened about 8 a.m. The car and truck collided, which led to the car being crushed and the truck rolling over.
“I heard dragging and scraping, then saw a cloud of dust moving down the highway,” said Richard Gorman, who lives about 50 feet from that stretch of I-70.
As bad as the accident sounded, it may have looked even worse, especially the sight of the car crushed by a load of lumber that had spilled off the tractor-trailer. Yet after the dust had settled, other than some minor scrapes, neither the car’s occupants nor the truck driver had been injured.
“I didn’t want to look in the window, but then I saw they were both standing outside the car,” said Gorman. “I was surprised they were alive.”
The tractor-trailer had been carrying a load of lumber that had spilled across the highway for about half a mile during the accident.
“It’s more or less shut down I-70,” said Trooper Josh Lewis. “Unfortunately we don’t have an estimated time of re-opening the highway during the commute. We need special equipment to clear the semi.”
According to Gorman, accidents at this location, which he has lived near for three years, are commonplace, but this one is one of the worst ones he has seen.
Not everyone is lucky enough to walk away from such a serious accident with only a few scrapes. Still, even though they avoided serious injury, the property damage alone could still cause the drivers major problems.
