Hayden Woman Starts Local TBI Support Group

Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) are the result of a sharp blow to the head or other disruptions of brain function. A serious injury can cause permanent physical, emotional and cognitive disabilities.

The state offers resources to help TBI patients connect with caretakers, counselors and understanding employers, but they have to know where to find them.

A woman from the rural community of Hayden is using her experiences with TBI to help other brain injury victims.

In 2009, Leigh Erceg broke her neck while working on her family’s farm. She awoke temporarily paralyzed and unable to remember her family. After being treated by many doctors and neurological specialists, she slowly recovered most of her lost function.

After her injury, Erceg remembered how much trouble she had finding resources:

“This town did not have a brain injury support group,” she recalled. “You’d be surprised at the amount of need.”

Where Can Brain Injury Victims Find Help?

Erceg founded her support group with help from the Brain Injury Alliance of Colorado (BIAC). The organization provides information and resources for TBI sufferers, as well as support for family, friends and caregivers.

The BIAC oversees more than 60 groups that help brain injury victims recover and live independent lives. The groups discuss medical advances and alternative medicine, including acupuncture, aromatherapy and hypnosis.
