Hoka Hey Biker Disqualified Due to Motorcycle Accident

The Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge is a cross-country motorcycle race that stipulates that participants cannot use any electric help, such as a cell phone or GPS device, and the bikers must sleep in a tent next to their bikes for the two-week journey. Hoka Hey awards $500,000 in prize money to the first biker who finishes the more than 10,000-mile trek. Jeff Westgard, a Hoka Hey participant from Fargo, created a spot for himself among the top 10 racers until pickup truck pulled out in front of him. According to inforum.com, the truck attempted to turn on a red light, and Westgard hit the truck at about 40 mph.

Westgard only suffered a bruised shoulder from the motorcycle accident. However, the collision destroyed Westgard’s Harley-Davidson Ultra Classic motorcycle, disqualifying the biker from finishing the race. Though Westgard lost his chance at the cash prize, he states that his experiences in the motorcycle race were worth the time spent on the road, and he may try the race again next year. In the meantime, Westgard plans to hit the road again this week, this time to work. He intends to take his wife’s scooter while his motorcycle is in the shop.
