How Can Smart Phones Improve Motorcycle Safety?

Smart phones are starting to play a greater role in improving motorcycle safety. New smart phone apps can allow riders to instantly diagnose mechanical issues, call for emergency services, and help locate missing motorcyclists.

A major manufacturer of electric motorcycles recently designed an app that can communicate with its bikes to diagnose problems. Riders can then call a customer service line with the information obtained from the app and get advice right away.

Newer models utilize “log files” that can be downloaded from the motorcycles and sent to the manufacturer to diagnose problems. According to the manufacturer, these features result in a 50 percent faster response time for emergency services.

How Can Apps Help Motorcycle Accident Survivors?

Other apps have been developed that can call for help in case of an emergency, use GPS signals to help locate people and automatically send text messages to relatives if someone fails to check in. While these apps are useful for car accidents, they could also be used to help victims of motorcycle accidents.

Earlier in June, a motorcyclist went missing in Colorado after he failed to arrive at his destination on time. Three weeks later, his motorcycle was found miles away from his body. Two weeks ago, a similar accident occurred when an 18-year-old motorcyclist was found dead after being reported missing by his family.

There is no guarantee mobile phone apps would have saved lives in these cases, but motorcycle accidents do require immediate medical attention. Having apps that can signal for help could potentially save lives.
