How New Products Are Improving Motorcycle Safety

New technologies could save the lives of riders by offering extra protection, improving visibility and reducing the odds of collisions.

Lack of visibility has always been a safety hazard for riders, and one that causes hundreds of deaths every year. In fact, lack of visibility is one of the leading causes of motorcycle accidents. Fortunately, electroluminescent paints like LumiLor can emit light from motorcycles, making it safer to ride in the dark. LumiLor, which requires an electric current to work, not only looks stylish on motorcycles, it can help save lives. Developed by Darkside Scientific, the coating comes in green, blue, white and orange.

Other products can help riders avoid fatal injuries from collisions. Motorcycle attire company Dainese has created an inflatable jacket outfitted with sensors. The Misano 1000 jacket can automatically inflate once it detects an impact. Inflatable jackets are nothing new, but the Misano 1000 is presently the only model with sensors attached inside of the jacket and not the motorcycle. Airbags built into the jacket can protect the collarbone, back and chest.

Are Anti-Collision Systems the Future of Motorcycle Safety?

The last group of products allows motorcycles to communicate with other vehicles, alerting motorists to nearby riders. Honda recently demonstrated its Car2Car system, which allows vehicles to communicate with each other. The auto manufacturer also has also developed the Motorcycle Approaching Indicator application, which would use flashing lights to warn motorists of nearby riders.

Anti-collision systems could soon become very widespread. Safety groups have called on National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to require the installation of anti-collision systems on all vehicles.
