How to Handle Aggressive Drivers

Driving requires patience. Most drivers do their best to share the road, but every once in a while you may encounter someone who drives aggressively. Knowing how to handle aggressive drivers is important, and could very well be a matter of life and death. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when you find yourself facing an aggressive driver:

  • Do not engage. A fight requires two parties. If you refuse to engage an angry driver, it makes his or her efforts to start a confrontation much more difficult.
  • Make space. Putting distance between you and your aggressor will help prevent an accident. Do not attempt to follow the angry driver, and never try to pull over and “settle things.”
  • Try not to make eye contact. Eye contact makes it personal, and you do not want that.
  • Stay in public. In your attempt to avoid the aggressor, do not go home or somewhere private. If you are pursued, try to make it to a police station or a mall or somewhere with people around. If you have a cell phone, call the authorities.

It is important to remember that no one wins in an auto accident. By staying calm and following the above tips, you will help ensure your safety and the safety of all the motorists you share the road with.
