Hyperbaric Chambers Put Pressure on TBI

The U.S. military may be pronouncing good news for victims of traumatic brain injuries (TBI). Scientists in the military are currently testing the effects of pressurized chambers on the brain. According to the Huffington Post, when the body is under pressure, it receives more oxygen, which helps the brain to heal. The chamber that the military is testing exerts the same pressure as being beneath 20 feet of water.

Symptoms of traumatic brain injury include headaches, dizziness, fatigue, mood problems, seizures, speech difficulties and even the inability to wake up from sleeping. A TBI occurs as a result of an object striking the head violently or suddenly, so anyone involved in a motor vehicle accident could experience this type of injury. In addition, the symptoms may not be noticeable right away. More than 134,000 military personnel experienced a traumatic brain injury since 2003, so military researchers are looking for answers.

The main researcher of the hyperbaric oxygen study cautions that they are “investigating further to determine how it might help, if it does help at all.” If the pressurized chambers can alleviate even some of TBI sufferers’ symptoms, the system could drastically improve millions of peoples’ lives.
