Inexperienced Rider Crashes Into Sonic Drive-In

Sergio Castaneda, 19, of Arkansas City, KS, crashed into a window of the Sonic Drive-In at 1510 N. Summit St. The motorcycle crash occurred at 1:25 p.m. on Tuesday, July 12, 2011.

The 19-year-old rider nearly hit five teenaged boys who were having lunch on the outside patio of the restaurant. None of the boys were injured in the incident.

Castaneda was leaving the Ark Valley Credit Union, across the street from the restaurant, when he lost control of his vehicle.

“He apparently is inexperienced at driving motorcycles, as he accelerated the motorcycle rapidly and lost control,” Wallace said.

Castaneda had just purchased the Suzuki GS 500 motorcycle prior to the accident.

Castaneda traveled onto Sonic’s outside patio and crashed into the plate glass window at the front of the building, said Police Chief Sean Wallace. He was injured in the accident.

Arkansas City emergency responders Lucas Martin and Craig Farley; and Master Patrol Officer Travis Stroud, and Sgt. Kevyn Ternes attended to Castaneda. He was transported to South Central Kansas Medical Center where he was listed in stable condition several hours later.

Castaneda was cited for no proof of insurance, no tag, no motorcycle license and careless driving, police said.
