Is My Yamaha Safe To Ride?

If you drive a Yamaha YZF-R1 sport bike produced from 2009-2013 or a Super Tenere XTZ12 touring motorcycle from 2012-2013, you should check the integrity of your headlights. Yamaha has issued a recall on 24,000 of the previously mentioned motorcycles after consumer reports indicated a propensity towards headlight overheating. Yamaha engineers investigated the malfunctioning motorcycles and found that the headlights generate sufficient heat to cause arcing inside the bulb, which in turn can melt the bulb apparatus.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), “[a]headlight failure reduces the rider’s ability to see clearly and the motorcycle’s visibility to oncoming traffic, increasing the risk of a crash.” Drivers who simply fail to see the motorcyclists in their rear view mirrors cause many motorcycle crashes. As such, motorcyclists with malfunctioning headlights are at a high risk for fatal accidents when sharing the road with inattentive motorists. Thankfully, Yamaha is replacing the headlights free of charge.
