Is Kawasaki Making a Supercharged Supersport?

Law Tigers at Salute to American Vets RallyNews just broke that Kawasaki is going to release an supersport version of its famous H2 and H2R models! Experts claim that patents have been filed and the bike will be ready to hit the streets next year, but hold on just a minute. Could this new revelation be nothing more than smoke, mirrors and wishful thinking?

Is There Really a Supercharged Supersport Coming to a Dealership Near You?

The motorcycling world exploded when Kawasaki released a supercharged 1000cc beast called the H2R. The bike roared fire and chewed up tires with over 300 horsepower, and then Kawi told everyone that there was more to come. Rumors surfaced that the mean green machine factory was going to make a bike called the Ninja R2, and that rumor was seemingly confirmed last month.

Sources leaked patent designs that showed what was thought to be a new Kawasaki supercharged machine. The design used a 2005 ZX-6R as the base, but added details like a trellis frame and a supercharger to the familiar design. The motorcycle world ran away with the story, claiming that this was Kawasaki’s Ninja R2—a supercharged 600cc supersport—but was it?

Dennis Chung at Motorcycle.com doesn’t seem to think so. The moto-journalist points out that not only is this design readily accessible on the United States Patent and Trademark Office website, but he also pointed out that it was filed around the time the H2 and H2R were being developed. Given the circumstances and the fact that the patent doesn’t expressly say it’s for a 600cc machine, Chung thinks that what we are actually seeing is one of the H2’s original patents.

Is Dennis Chung right? Is the motorcycling community letting its imagination run wild? Will Kawasaki take this sudden interest in a supercharged supersport as a sign that it does need to build such a machine? What will these new bikes mean for motorcycle safety?
