Long Time Riders Urge Motorists to be Mindful of Motorcycles in Traffic

Long time motorcyclists Jere and Maurine Pyburn have spent the past 20 years enjoying the freedom and excitement of riding motorcycles together, and in their home state of Louisiana, they are taking part in Motorcyclist Awareness and Safety Month this May. They have already begun speaking to groups about what they can do to avoid harming motorcyclists and spreading the word about motorcycle safety.

Maureen and Jere met through their love of motorcycles in high school while Jere worked at Cushman motor scooters. Now they are giving back by holding presentations about motorcycle safety not just to inform other riders, but to speak to automobile drivers as well.

Drivers who have experience riding motorcycles or have family members who ride are best about paying attention to motorcycles on the road, Jere says. Because motorcycles are harder to spot, it’s important for motorists to keep them in mind when driving, whether they’re on the highway or a slow street. The most important thing Maureen and Jere stress to automobile drivers is to avoid distractions. Distractions easily cause wrecks with other vehicles, but because of the lower visibility of motorcyclists, distracted drivers pose an even greater threat.
