Intersections are dangerous places for motorists. However, some intersections are truly horrific and are more likely to cause car accidents. TIME located the most dangerous intersection in the country by scouring data published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The Pennsylvania road discussed by TIME has many of the common characteristics associated with dangerous intersections in Colorado and elsewhere. These characteristics include:
- High volume: The busiest intersections may also be the most dangerous. A greater number of drivers, buses, trucks, cyclists and pedestrians means more opportunities for accidents. Some intersections in Denver, such as Colorado Boulevard and 17th Avenue, see an influx of 20,000 motorists during rush hour.
- Poor visibility: Intersections with poor visibility have multiple safety problems. Oncoming traffic may be hidden by an overpass, structure or elevated hill. Drivers at these intersections may not see each other in time to avoid collisions. Poor lighting can make it difficult for drivers to read traffic signs.
- Factors that complicate traffic flow: Excessive jaywalkers, wildlife, awkward road layouts and other factors may interrupt the flow of traffic and cause accidents.
- Lack of signage: Intersections with inadequate signage, or traffic signs worn down by weather, are more likely to cause accidents. Motorists may spend too much time trying to comprehend the signs, taking their attention off the road.
- No left-hand turns lanes: Drivers making left-hand turns at intersections are most likely to be involved in an accident. These types of turns require quick judgement and little room for error. Ideally, intersections with left-hand turn lanes should also use traffic lights.
How Should You Treat Dangerous Intersections in Colorado?
Statistics gathered by the Federal Highway Administration show there were 2.5 million intersection accidents in 2007. This number accounted for 40 percent of all car accidents, and 21.5 percent of traffic fatalities. All intersections have the potential to be dangerous because there are more opportunities for collisions to occur. Please remember to avoid all distractions while traversing intersections, and be extra careful while making left-hand turns.
