Man Critically Hurt in Train Collision

An unidentified man, 45, is recovering from critical injuries after a train hit his car in Bucyrus on the morning of Sunday, June 12, 2011.

The accident occurred at about 3:30 a.m. at the intersection of Fourth and 223rd. The car, a 1994 Plymouth sedan, was sitting on the tracks facing south. A northbound Union Pacific train approached on the same track, was unable to stop in time, and hit the car.

The man was trapped in the wreckage. When emergency crews arrived they had to cut him out from beneath the vehicle. Emergency crews rushed the man to a hospital in Overland Park.

The Sheriff’s Department, Miami County EMS, Spring Hill Fire, and Johnson County EMS responded to the accident. Responders at the scene reported that it appeared the man was trying to get out of his car at the time of impact.

It is not clear why his car was on the train tracks and police are still investigating the cause of the accident.
