A man on a mission to spread awareness of motorcycle safety has started a nationwide journey. This summer, the rider with 20 years of experience on motorcycles will traverse all 50 states to share his message.
Throughout his journey, he will visit state capitals, vehicle departments, lawmakers and transportation department administrators to discuss how they can strengthen existing laws on motor vehicle safety. One idea the experienced rider wants to see put into action is a new question on state driver’s license tests that would test knowledge on sharing the road with motorcycles. In addition to meeting with decision makers and policy planners from around the country, he will also talk to other drivers.
As an experienced rider, he can recall several instances where motorists have pulled out in front of him, cut him off, or driven into his lane. He can recall distracted and reckless drivers who have come very close to colliding with his motorcycle. His personal experiences have emboldened him to help states teach motorists to learn to share the road with motorcycles. The journey, which he is halfway through, will take a total of 2.5 months.
Why Is Motorcycle Safety An Important Message To Promote?
National Highway Transportation Safety Administration statistics confirm that motorcycle safety could use improvement across the nation. In 2011, there were 81,000 motorcyclists injured, and then in 2012, 93,000, a 15 percent increase. In 41 percent of crashes that occurred in 2012, vehicles were turning left while motorcyclists were going straight. Federal transportation department statistics confirm the majority of motorcycle accidents occur in intersections.
A message of motorcycle safety from an experienced rider may help prevent future motorcycle accidents.
