If you have ever been downtown in a city and turned the wrong way down a one-way street, you might have found the experience both comical and a bit scary. Driving the wrong way down the interstate, though, is no laughing matter.
State Troopers received a multitude of phone calls late Friday night reporting an SUV travelling the wrong way on I-25 through Fountain, CO. By the time the troopers were able to respond a crash had already occurred.
Michael Russell of Colorado Springs managed to travel at least 5 miles north on southbound I-25 before he slammed head-on into an SUV driven by Binu George and Aleysa George of Pueblo West, killing all three. Authorities pronounced everyone dead at the scene. The crash is still under investigation, but authorities suspect that Russell was intoxicated, said Colorado State Patrol Sgt. Mike Baker.
“Something that seems so ludicrous to us becomes commonplace with people who are intoxicated,” Baker said.
While both Binu’s were wearing their seatbelts, Russell was not.
It is disturbing to note that although multiple bystanders tried to reach authorities, the troopers responded as quickly as they could, and the Binu’s wore their seat belts, this deadly car accident still happened, all due to one individual’s mistake.
