Man Used Adaptive Sports to Recover from Spinal Cord Injury

Adaptive sports are activities that accident survivors with disabilities can enjoy. By using clever engineering and ingenuity, several people have become famous for succeeding in competitive events despite having a serious injury.

A Colorado man who sustained a spinal cord injury during a fall has taken up his old hobby of skiing to help himself recover. According to the man, his fall occurred while he was skiing two years ago during Valentine’s Day. He remembers coming out of his skis and flying headfirst into the road. After his accident, moving his neck and head became very difficult.

Although the man still has balance and motor skill problems from his injury, he underwent physical therapy to help him return to the ski slopes. His therapist has devised techniques that will help the man retrain coordination between his eyes and the muscles used to turn his head.

Can Adaptive Sports Help People With Spinal Cord Injuries?

Spinal cord injuries vary in severity, meaning what is possible for some may not be possible for others.

Incorporating adaptive sports into therapy for traumatic brain injuries and spinal cord injuries is not a new concept. According to a former NFL player, adaptive sports help patients physically and mentally.

Physical activities such as yoga and the use of modified treadmills have become more common in treating catastrophic injuries and disabilities. Colorado is home to an adaptive sports center, with activities such as mono skiing and canoeing.
