Several months back we wrote about a young Nebraskan couple killed by a drunk driver. A jury recently sentenced the man who hit the couple to serve much of the rest of his life, if not all of it, in prison.
Robert Mahler, 55, had a blood alcohol content over two times the legal limit when he veered into the oncoming lane, hitting the motorcycle ridden by 20-year-old Christopher Oberg and 19-year-old Alexis “Lexi” Calfee. He pled guilty in November to two counts of motor vehicle homicide. Mahler was sentenced to 25 to 40 years in prison on each count.
The sentences are to be served consecutively, meaning Mahler will not be eligible for parole until he is 81.
Friends and family packed the courtroom during sentencing. Mahler avoided eye contact with either family throughout the proceedings, but did apologize for his actions. Lexi’s father, Todd Calfee, is glad Mahler will be where he cannot hurt anyone else.
“We’re hoping he never sees the streets again so no family goes through what we’re going through,” he said.
Todd plans to continue working through the “Alexis PROJECT,” a nonprofit he created to raise awareness about designated driving after Lexi’s motorcycle accident. “This isn’t going to stop,” he said. “I’m going to keep going.”
