Mom, Infant In Critical Condition After Denver Car Crash

With her six-week-old infant in tow, Shalimar McComas drove her husband to work at 2:00 a.m. on Monday, November 19. After she dropped him off, a speeding Dodge Cherokee struck her vehicle from behind. Witnesses say the Cherokee was driving close to 100 mph.

“Those kinds of speeds are never a good idea, even on the freeway,” said Lt. Chuck DeShazer with the Aurora Police Department. “The posted speed limit in this area is 45.”

McComas’s Caliber rolled down a nearby embankment, and the Cherokee flipped and landed on its roof.

Critical Injuries

The Cherokee’s driver was ejected from the vehicle. He is currently in a medically induced coma. The baby, who was strapped in by a child restraint, has “a potential closed head injury,” according to DeShazer. Her mother had minor injuries.

Traumatic brain injuries are potentially catastrophic, especially for victims so young. Brain damage at an early age can influence how the brain develops as the child grows, potentially leading to learning defects, memory problems, mobility problems and even psychological issues like depression.
