Are you a fan of American motorcycle racing? Did you used to be a fan of our national racing series? Well, now might be a good time to get in the habit of watching some motorcycle races. It seems that the sport is growing in our country, and you don’t want to be left out.
Motorcycle Racing in America Is Returning to Popularity
National racing series here in North America have had a rough time in the past decade. When the recession hit, and manufacturers dropped out of the AMA Roadracing series, crowds seemed to shrivel up. Even after the economic recovery, crowds weren’t returning to races and the AMA series seemed to be on its last legs. That’s when the KRAVE group took control of the nation’s premiere motorcycle racing league and things haven’t been the same since.
In the 2017 season, MotoAmerica—the newest incarnation of the country’s national motorcycle racing championship—has seen an explosion in viewership. TV ratings are up 56 percent over last year’s ratings, and the series social media accounts have grown around 43 percent. At the MotoAmerica/World Superbike event held at Laguna Seca, 64,298 spectators showed up for the races. In 2016, only 61,052 fans showed up, and the year before that only 52,704.
No one quite knows what is causing this explosion in spectators and fans, but this increase in viewership is leading to great things for motorcycling. With a new motorcycle riding coaching organization soon to open and more manufacturers possibly joining the MotoAmerica paddock, more American talent may have the chance to shine. After the loss of Nicky Hayden, America needs her next world racing champion, maybe that racer could come from Colorado.
