Are There Motorcycles on the Takata Airbag Recall List?

In 2006, Honda released a revolutionary safety feature on its Gold Wing line of motorcycles. The ultra-plush highway tourer, which already had a stereo and air-conditioning, was equipped with an airbag, too. This new feature would deploy whenever a Gold Wing motorcycle was involved in a serious head on collision, and it would prevent riders from slamming into the bike’s instrument cluster or windscreen, but Honda made one mistake when they added this safety feature.

As one of the largest automakers in the world, Honda has lots of resources. The company decided to trust the production of its motorcycle airbags to the same company that provided it with airbags for its automobiles—Takata Corp. In 2006, the directors of the company couldn’t have foreseen the legendary boondoggle that was on the horizon, and because of this, there is now a herd of Honda Gold Wing owners lining up behind the millions of car owners who need their deadly airbag inflators replaced.

It is estimated that Honda is now recalling around 2,700 airbag-equipped Gold Wings—year models 2006-2010.
