Motorcycling in Colorado: How to Ride in Hot Weather

August is here, which means we are riding into the hottest month of the year. Are your hot weather riding skills up to par? Well, the attorneys who ride at the Metier Law Firm want to give you a refresher course on ways to stay cool while riding.

How Do I Stay Cool on a Ride in Hot Weather?

  • Are you wearing the right gear? Safety gear is important to motorcyclists and their safety. So, removing your gear is never the right solution to getting hot while riding. Instead, plan ahead. Get vented or mesh gear made of textiles. It’ll keep you safe and keep you cool.
  • Is your bike equipped for the heat? We’re not talking about checking your radiator (though that is something you should do regularly). No, we are talking about that big windscreen on the front of your bike. In normal weather, this keeps the wind off you and makes the ride more comfortable, but not in hot weather. In high temperatures, the less wind that runs over your body, the hotter you will be. Huge windscreens will also keep air from getting to the vents in that new textile gear you bought.
  • Did you get a drink? One of the most important parts of riding in the heat is staying hydrated. The best way to do that is with water. Avoid coffee and sodas, the sugar and caffeine may provide temporary energy, but you could feel really bad after it wears off. The occasional sport drink can also help, but only when paired with lots of water. Drink frequently, either from a water bladder like a CamelBak or take frequent stops. It should also go without saying, don’t drink alcohol. Not only can it affect your ability to ride, alcohol also speeds up dehydration.
